What
The TOEFL ITP® tests are paper-based and use 100 percent academic content to evaluate the English-language proficiency of non-native English speakers to assess your ability in a real-world academic setting. All questions are multiple choice and you answer questions by filling in an answer sheet. The tests evaluate skills in three areas:
■ Listening Comprehension measures the ability to understand spoken English as it is used in colleges and universities
■ Structure and Written Expression measures recognition of selected structural and grammatical points in standard written English
■ Reading Comprehension measures the ability to read and understand academic reading material in English

Why
NYIT will assess your English proficiency level in four different skills. This will allow us to be able to pinpoint the areas in which you need help, so we can tailor your teaching to meet those needs. Knowing our students English skill levels better today gives you the best chance for success during your study at ICUC-NYIT. Using your scores we will be able to place you in our intensive English-language program should you need to further develop your academic English proficiency at the college or graduate level.
Preparing for the English Placement Test
Preparing well for your testing session can save you both time and money. Placing into the right courses will help you achieve your educational goals faster. Come to your session well rested and alert. Allow plenty of time to complete testing without rushing. Ask the test administrator for assistance if needed.

TOEFL ITP®
Here are some sample questions and directions for each section similar to those you will find in the TOEFL ITP® tests.
Just follow these easy steps:
Step 1 — Print ananswer sheeton which to mark your answers. Then you can work through the sample questions using the links below. If you dont have access to a printer, you can use a plain piece of paper as an answer sheet for these practice questions. During the actual full-length test, test takers are not allowed to take notes or write in the test book.
Step 2 — Try a set of sample questions for Level 1 (TOEFL ITP test) or Level 2 (Pre-TOEFL test) by following one of the links below.

OPI
The OPI will include questions that ask you to:
■ Talk about your daily schedule/life/hobbies
■ Discuss recent news/events
■ Talk about the plot of a favorite book/movie
■ Give your opinion on a subject
■ Role play
To prepare you should study recent news and related vocabulary. Both the American news and Chinese news may be brought up. You should know what your favorite movie or books are, and have the words to describe the plot cohesively. Of course, you should also spend time speaking and listening in English.
Your test will be evaluated on your response to the task, your understanding of the topic, and your ability to use the English language well, including vocabulary, grammar, and style. You will be scored on a 10-point scale:
1. Beginner – Low
2. Beginner – Mid
3. Beginner – High
4. Intermediate – Low
5. Intermediate – Mid
6. Intermediate – High
7. Advanced – Low
8. Advanced – Mid
9. Advanced – High
10. Native speaker
When you are ready you should record your responses to the following questions in one audio file (WAV, MP3, WMA, MPG, MP4, or FLV). Name the file with your last name-first name-student ID number. For example, Wang-Xu-1234567. Please bring a copy of your responses on a flash drive on the day of the English Placement Test.
1. Talk about one of your hobbies or special interests in detail.
2. Mars One will establish a permanent human settlement on Mars. Crews of four will depart every two years, starting in 2026. The first unmanned mission will be launched in 2020. What do you think will happen based on the establishment of these settlements? Most countries and organizations have long-term, removed plans to travel to Mars, Mars One’s short mission timeline stands alone. Why, then, do you think the organization plans to colonize Mars with such haste? If it simply extended its timeline, do you think would certainly garner more respect from the scientific community? Why?
3. What is your favorite movie? Why is it your favorite film? Describe the plot of the movie in your own words.
4. What is the best restaurant in your hometown? Why do you like it so much?
